Mark Bailey has been an instructor for SAS Education since 1998. Before working at SAS, Mark started his career in applied statistics at Eastman Kodak. He later moved to Abbott Laboratories, where he introduced nonlinear regression techniques for dose-response curves and the design of experiments (DOE). Those years prepared him well for his position at SAS. At first, Mark taught JMP courses and supported data mining using Enterprise Miner, but for many years now he has focused on the JMP curriculum. He has regularly taught the introductory course, the ANOVA and regression course, both designed experiments courses (the custom DOE course, which he wrote, and the classic DOE course, which he helped write), and the scripting course. In addition to his teaching duties, Mark stays busy through the mentoring services offered at SAS. His many mentoring jobs include writing scripts for customers to automate processes and helping customers design and analyze experiments.
A favorite JMP instructor, Mark has been known to go the extra mile for individual students to help with a project or to explain course material further. "He took the extra time and effort to work one-on-one with me, assuring that I felt comfortable utilizing the software to reap its full benefit," said Dr. Andrei A. Zlota, principal process engineer, Chemical Process Research and Development at Sepracor, Inc. Others described him as "enthusiastic and knowledgeable, particularly about DOE and scripting," "more than willing to answer questions," "well-organized," "clever, enthusiastic," and "witty and easy-going."
As a member of the JMP Training team, Mark regularly assists other instructors with projects. It is not only customers who benefit from Mark’s willingness to help, but also his colleagues. He has been an integral part of the development and revisions of JMP courses over the years, contributing such course components as pedagogical scripts and innovative demonstrations. He has also written a number of workshops for the annual JMP User Conference, held in Cary each June.
It is no surprise that students in any course, but especially the DOE and scripting courses, consider themselves lucky to have Mark Bailey as their instructor. We in JMP Training also feel lucky to have him as a colleague.
Mark lives in New Jersey with his wife, Linda, and their kids Greg and Lisa. In his free time, Mark enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, canoeing, reading, and photography.
