lock column widths to desired width including shorter than column name length

I would like to not be forced to resize my columns every time something happens in the data table. I would like to be able to set a column either by JSL or manually and then lock it so that it doesn't change until I decide to change it. I want to be able to lock the width smaller that the column name width too so that it does not change back to the length of the column name.

Agree this is an issue for me.  It doesn't make sense that the column widths would change when I'm not interacting with that column.  Then I am constantly having to manually change the column widths.
