phonetic symbols in JMP graphs

Dear users,

I use JMP to do Linguistic analysis, for which I need to use symbols of the IPA (International phonetic association) (e.g. ingma, bared i etc.) as variables in my stats. When I import data into JMP, some of these symbols do not display in the table or the graphs I make. All I see are square boxes. However, in the table, you actually see the symbol when you click on the box. I try paying with the font settings but it doesn't solve it. Is there any way to fix this and get the symbols to appear in the graphs?

Re: phonetic symbols in JMP graphs

The most likely explanation is that the particular font you're using doesn't contain those characters. Try, for instance, Arial Unicode MS.

Thanks for the reply. I tried that before, it doesn't work.

Another possibility is an encoding problem. For instance, JMP is assuming UTF-8 but the text file is using something else. You might try opening the file in a text editor like Notepad and resaving it as something distinct like UTF-16.
