I had to give up all earlier versions to install JMP12 so can't test this directly but suspecting syntax like this fails in earlier versions?

summarize(dt,var=by(columnname));

Solution

Yes, that's new in JMP 12.

Here's what you get in JMP 11.

dt=open("$SAMPLE_DATA\Big Class.jmp");

columnname=column("Age");

summarize(dt,var=by(columnname));

/*:

Must be Assign Operator in access or evaluation of 'dt' , dt/*###*/

In the following script, error marked by /*###*/

dt = Open( "$SAMPLE_DATA\Big Class.jmp" );

columnname = Column( "Age" );

Summarize( dt/*###*/, var = by( columnname ) );

Thanks!  Discovering it the hard way by accidentally using that in a script to be run by folks who haven't updated to JMP12 but it's a good feature.
