Making Sense of Your Data using Basic Analysis and Plotting

This session covers a number of different JMP interactive graphical tools to use to make sense for basic analysis and plotting.  In-depth sessions on the tools are also offered during the year as live Mastering JMP webinars and are always available as recorded webinar videos.

NOTE: Redfin files used in the demo are included in the .zip file. After unzipping, find a .jmp file plus a Redfin Import Folder for the original Redfin files.

See how to:

  • Access some basic new JMP 17 utilities
    • Menu Preference to mark menu items added since a previous JMP version
    • Find new Scripting Index additions since JMP 17
    • Search button Help > Search JMP or Ctrl+comma to search text, see and go to related procedures
  • Visualize relationships
  • Compare two variables
  • Reshape data tables
  • Save and share analyses

Q&A  from @Jeff_Upton  live webinar:

Q: How can you find out how many distinct variables do you have in a column? Would you do it through distribution?

A: You could use Distribution. You could also use the histogram headers that Jordan was looking at for a quick look.

Q: Is there way to look at those selected 75 rows in a different table?

A: Yes. You can select the rows and use the Table>Subset platform to create a new table with only those rows.

Q: Is there a way to summarize in graph builder like regular XY plots? By summary, I mean data like means, std dev. and other key values.

A: Yes, there is an Caption Box element in Graph Builder that will allow you to add summary statistics to your graph. Either on top of the graph or as a table below the graph  See short video.  See a video and Q&A on using Graph Builder.

Q: How can we combine these graphs? Is it possible to make it interactive like a dashboard?

A: You can absolutely make dashboards. If you create the visuals and leave them open, then choose File> New>New Dashboard to open JMP dashboard builder. There’s also a quick method via Window>Combine Windows.

Q: Are the data points in the map graph live?

A: Yes, Graph Builder will dynamically update as you add/subtract/change values.

Q: Can you point to a data point to get its value shown in a pop up?

A: Yes, if you select rows or columns and right click, you’ll be able to apply a Label. These row/column values will then appear. Row values show directly on the graph and column values show when you hover over the points. You can also pin the hover labels to the graph to make certain results ‘pop’.

Q: When I save to PowerPoint, it seems as if each analysis section gets saved to a different slide. Can I avoid that?

A: Yes, if you want to select what you want, use the fat plus selection tool, copy, and then paste using Paste Special.
