Free learning resources to take your JMP skills forward: Learning at every level

What level of learning JMP are you – and are you ready to level up?!I love many things about JMP, but one that I think almost all JMP users can appreciate is that there’s always something new to learn that will extend and accelerate what you can do with JMP. Maybe it’s learning a new platform you’ve never used (or even heard of!), or perhaps it’s learning a new and more efficient way to get the analyses and graphs you want from the platforms you already know and love. Whatever the case, now is the time to take your JMP skills to the next level, and we’ve got the learning resources to help you on your way, no matter where you’re starting.

Level 1: You’re a brand-new user.

Congrats! You’re about to unlock amazing new value and potential in your data, and we couldn’t be more excited that you’ve chosen JMP to help you do it.

Here are the top three resources for brand-new users: 

1. Attend a Getting Started Webcast (1 hour): Every Friday, we have a live getting started webcast where we walk you through the basics of JMP. Have a question? Go ahead and ask! Our presenters are ready and willing to address all your questions and concerns.
2. The New User Welcome Kit: This guided learning resource includes videos, text and exercises to walk you through JMP (2 hours).
3. Visit the Learn JMP area to learn specific analyses and procedures. Learn JMP includes hundreds of short videos and longer tutorials, as well as learning paths and activities to master JMP.
4. Do you prefer to read? JMP comes with excellent documentation and getting started guides, available online, and in the software under Help > Books. If you’re just starting out, give “Discovering JMP” a read, and when you’re ready for more, read “Using JMP.”

Level 2: You use JMP every now and then, but only the few platforms that you need for your work. You consider yourself knowledgeable about using JMP, but don’t yet feel like an expert.

You have a good base of JMP knowledge, and now is the time to build on that by learning new platforms and methods.

Here are the top three resources for your level:

1. Attend live Mastering JMP webinars, ask questions, and try everything you see in the webinar with your own data. If you can’t attend a particular webinar live you can view a recorded version in the Tutorials area of Learn JMP.
2. Learn (or refresh) your knowledge of statistics by signing up for our free online course, Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving. Not only will you get a better understanding of the statistical methods you’re applying, but you’ll pick up new JMP skills in the nearly 100 JMP demonstration videos.

• *Bonus* If you prefer a structured approach to your JMP learning, professional JMP Training is available both online and in the classroom. JMP training is an affordable way to rapidly accelerate your learning so you most quickly reach your full potential with JMP.

Level 3: You’re a weekly or even daily JMP user, use a large number of platforms, and consider yourself fairly well-versed using JMP interactively.

You know quite a bit about JMP, are effective in your analytic work, and have no problem getting things done. To level up from this point, you need to hone the skills you have so you can be maximally efficient, which will involve learning new, advanced techniques for using JMP interactively, as well as dipping into the powerful world of JMP scripting. But don’t worry, even if you’ve never programmed as much as a microwave’s clock, you’ll be able to take advantage of JMP’s powerful, and intuitive scripting environment.

Here are the top three ways to level up:

1. Attend Advanced Mastering JMP webinars on any topic that’s of interest. Ask questions, and try everything you see in the webinar with your own data. If you can’t make a particular webinar, then watch some on demand in the tutorial section of Learn JMP. 
2. Attend a Mastering or Advanced Mastering JMP webinar specifically on scripting.
3. If you have some programming background, read the “Scripting Guide” available online, or in JMP under Help  > Books. If you do not have much of a programming background, or prefer a more guided introduction to JMP Scripting, check out either of the following fantastic books on learning how to use JMP scripting to enhance your use of JMP:

   2. Jump Into JMP Scripting

Level 4: You use JMP daily for a variety of situations, use JMP both interactively and by writing custom JSL, and might even support others with custom scripts and applications.

You are dangerous with JMP. People regularly comment on how fast you are with your analysis work, and have questioned at times whether or not you’re actually a wizard. To improve from here, you need to broaden your application of JMP to problems you might not have considered before, and need to always be on the lookout for new ways to be more efficient.

Here are the top three things you can do to level up:

1. Regularly visit the JMP community so you can read solutions to questions being asked. Seeing how the experts solve problems will give you new ideas and lead to more creative solutions yourself. See a question you can answer? Answer it!
2. Attend user groups in your area, or if there aren’t any, attend the Virtual User Group meetings. Meetings are a great way to connect with other JMP users (as well as experts) so you can exchange tips and best practices.
3. Dig into the documentation for platforms you regularly use. Both online, and under Help > Books is the monumentally extensive documentation for JMP, separated into books based on topic areas. In there, you will find details about every platform and procedure in JMP – so if you want to deepen your knowledge about all the things JMP can do, a deep dive into particular platforms is a great place to start.

Level 5: You live and breathe JMP. You think and dream in JSL.

We salute you, JMP master! At level 5, enhancing your skill with JMP is less about learning a new platform or technique, and more about sharpening your application of your skills to new situations and challenges (what psychologists call adaptive transfer, the effective application of skills to tasks that are structurally distinct from those in which the skills were initially learned).

Here are the top three things you can do to practice this:

1. Regularly visit the JMP community and challenge yourself to come up with solutions to people’s questions. There is no better practice available for applying your skills to new challenges than actually applying your skills to new challenges!
2. Continue to watch Advanced Mastering JMP webinars, even those topics that don’t relate directly to your work – there is much learning to be had even in webinars outside your given area.
3. Teach others. There is no better teacher than teaching. Start a user group at your company or university, meet with colleagues one-on-one to help them level up their skills, and take every opportunity to explain to others how you would approach a problem in JMP.
