different behavior of "clear" for conditional data filters

☑ cool new feature
☑ could help many users!

☐ removes a „bug“

☐ nice to have

☐ nobody needs it

Conditional Data filter means that "age (1)" defines the items which are displayed in "name (2)". --> cool

Clearing the selection in age clears the selection in "name" --> very disappointing!

It's clear that the selected rows will change if something is deselected in the data filter.

But it's not clear why selections in other data filters are changed.

Could you please change this behaviour.

New behavior:

If a selection is cleared in one of the filters, the selections in the other filters stay as they are
(- and the row selection is adjusted to fit to the displayed selection.)

the proposed behavior has some advantages:

most important: it allows a very cool way of selecting things - which is not possible with the corrent behavior of the data filter:

  • use a first filter to select rows with interesting features:
    e.g.
    -- fail units
    -- students with best grades
    -- outliers of Covid statistics
  • select some entries in a second filter (just showing entries which match the first criterion) [-> what is selected]
all/some of the listed batches [-> fail units in batches with fail units]
all/some of the listed classes [-> students with best grades, some classes selected]
all/some of the listed countries [-> countries with outliers of covid cases selected]
  • clear the first data filter, then the selection is:
    - just batches with fail units
    - just the classes with the best students
    - just countries with outliers from Covid statistics

cool, right?

another benefit:

Let's assume that you have a large data set which can just be displayed efficiently if a subset is selected

Then the current "clear all sun-selections" behavior for conditional data filters results in long graph rendering times
(and the resulting graph is not even one which the user is interested in; the first thing afterwards: apply the selection again).

With the new behavior, the user could just make a "dummy" selection (just a single row), clear one data filter, apply another data filter and release the dummy selection.
