JMP Wish List

We want to hear your ideas for improving JMP software.

  1. Search: Please search for an existing idea first before submitting a new idea.
  2. Submit: Post your new idea using the Suggest an Idea button. Please submit one actionable idea per post rather than a single post with multiple ideas.
  3. Kudo & Comment Kudo ideas you like, and comment to add to an idea.
  4. Subscribe: Follow the status of ideas you like. Refer to status definitions to understand where an idea is in its lifecycle. (You are automatically subscribed to ideas you've submitted or commented on.)

We consider several factors when looking for what ideas to add to JMP. This includes what will have the greatest benefit to our customers based on scope, needs and current resources. Product ideas help us decide what features to work on next. Additionally, we often look to ideas for inspiration on how to add value to developments already in our pipeline or enhancements to new or existing features.

Graphbuilder: option to rotate - and position - labels

☐ cool new feature
☐ could help many users!

☑ removes something that looks like a bug

☐ nice to have

☐ nobody needs it

What inspired this wish list request?

In GraphBuilder, there is an option to add labels "by value" directly inside the graph.

Unfortunately, there is no option to adjust the orientation of the label. Therefore, labels are sometimes hard to read:

What is the improvement you would like to see?

For axis labels and annotation text, there exist options to adjust the orientation.

Please implement a similar option to adjust the orientation of "labels by value."

edit:
Please also add an option to control the placement:
Graph Builder Bar Graph Label Offset

Why is this idea important?

Labels in Bar graphs are often not readable and via the GUI the user doesn't have a chance to fix that.
Just some JSL experts can generate graphs with readable labels.

[the issue got more severe in JMP 18 doe to the new way of label placement]

With the new options, any user could make the labels readable

Very important @hogi . Thanks for the ideas.

More often, I returned to Excel charts just because in Excel can rotates the label (options).

The availability of a single feature can have a huge impact on decision making - especially if a feature is just available in the current software and missing/different in Jmp.

A tiny disadvantage/bug/misfunction can balance many benefits.

A trick which I just learned from @Byron_JMP  at https://community.jmp.com/t5/Byron-Wingerd-s-Blog/Graph-Builder-Bar-Graph-Label-Offset/bc-p/777978/h... :

DispatchSeg(	BarSeg( 1 ),	Set Font( "", 18, "", 90 )	)

cool, -> hits the nail.

So, please add a setting in the GUI which implements this trick in the background.

Besides that, it seems that with JMP 18 we lost the chance to put the value labels to the center of the bars.

As an add-on - following the idea of @Byron_JMP 's blopg post:
Graph Builder Bar Graph Label Offset
-> please also add a control for the placement of the labels

- above the bar [default]
- on top (inside bar)
- center of the bar [like it was possible in JMP 17]

- at the bottom

hi @Sarah-Sylvestre , I added the second topic: label placement   to the wish.

as important as the orientation.

Just as a side note. When I saved this as a preset, it only works on the same data set, if there are more x levels those levels aren't formatted.
