Issue Description
Sometimes when a JMP file, such as JMP, JSL, JRN, JRP, etc., is opened by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, a new instance of JMP may open. This could cause many different JMP sessions to be open at once. The preferred response is to have the JMP file open in the existing instance of JMP. To correct this, users should ensure that JMP is the preferred program to open these files.
Resolution
To ensure your JMP version is the preferred program to open these files:
Right click the JMP icon and select "Run as Administrator" to open the program. Within JMP, navigate to File ► Preferences ► Windows Specific and click Reset Associations. If successful, a message should appear saying, "Associations reset successfully."
This step usually resolves the issue without further action. If not, close JMP and perform each step below, opening JMP and testing the issue after applying each step.
- Close JMP. Locate a .jmp file, and right-click it. Select Open With. Under Other Options select More Apps and choose Notepad from the list. Select the check box Always use this app to open .jmp files. Click Okay. Via File Explorer open several of these JMP files in Notepad by double-clicking the .jmp file. Repeating the above, locate a .jmp file, and right-click it. Select Open With. Under Other Options select More Apps and choose JMP version Annual License (i.e. JMP 17 Annual License) from the list. Select the check box Always use this app to open .jmp files. Click Okay. Via File Explorer open several of these JMP files by double-clicking the .jmp file. Verify the files open in the same JMP instance.
- If step 1 is unsuccessful close JMP and continue with the following steps: The Reset Associations button creates a jmptemp.reg file in the user folder C:\Users\user-ID\AppData\Local\Temp. Sometimes this file does not automatically merge with the .reg file due to a lack of permissions. Locate and double-click the jmptemp.reg file. If a warning or error is encountered, IT services might be required to help merge the file successfully. An administrator needs to right-click regedit.exe on your machine, choose Run as Administrator, and merge the jmptemp.reg file by using the File ► Import menu in regedit.exe. Open JMP and try opening multiple files via File Explorer.
- If step 2 is unsuccessful close JMP and continue with the following steps:
- Go to Start ► Control Panel ► All Control Panel Items ► Default Programs. (Depending on your version of Windows, this path might instead be Start ► Control Panel ► Programs ► Default Programs.)
- Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Advance to the next step if you do not see this option.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Choose default apps by file type.
- Locate a .jmp or .jmpapp file and select it. That should bring up a list via the Choose an app window.
- Select your JMP version (e.g., JMP 16).
- Open JMP and try opening multiple files via File Explorer.
- If step 3 is unsuccessful close JMP and continue with the following steps:
- Locate a .jmp file, and right-click it.
- Select Properties ► Change. If you see your JMP version, select the version and omit the following steps.
- Select More Apps if you do not see your JMP version.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose Look for another app on this PC.
- Navigate to the jmp.exe file for the JMP version installed on your system: C:\Program Files\SAS\JMPPRO-or-JMP\version.
- Right-click jmp.exe and click Open.
- Open JMP and try opening multiple files via File Explorer.
Test to Confirm
Test opening the file types JMP, JSL, JRN, and JRP to ensure they remain in the same JMP session.
