In text explorer, how can we stem only certain words and not all?

I am using the text explorer platform in JMP Pro 16 and I know that you can use "Stemming for Combining" to stem only the terms where two or more terms stem to the same term and then add exceptions to it on a need basis. But I was wondering if you can choose the "No Stemming" option and then add only certain words to stem? For my analysis, the second option might be faster because I have only a few words to stem as opposed to having only a few exceptions. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Stemming does not work in that direction. You can turn it on and then designate exceptions that you do not want stemmed. It does not work in the other direction.

Perhaps you could use the recode feature instead of stemming to reduce the variations in the terms with the same meaning.

We have had success by using the Recode approach that Mark describes.
