How can you change the color of one single bin of a histogram?

Can the colors of histogram bins/bars be independently controlled? I am able to change the color of the entire histogram, but I can't find an option to change the color of selected bars.

Re: How can you change the color of one single bin of a histogram?

Here is how I do that.

1. Open Graph Builder

2. Drag your histogram binning column to the X drop area

3. Change the graph from points to Bar

4. Drag the same binning column to the Color drop area.

5. By rt mouse clicking on the legend color block, you can change the bar colors to whatever you want

Re: How can you change the color of one single bin of a histogram?

Hi Mark.

I was also wondering the same thing, but for histograms in the Distribution platform.
You see, in the other software packages I'm exposed to, it's easy to change the color of specific bin(s).

But then I realized why that is - in those stat softwares, all the graph outputs are just static - bins are just regular shapes that can be edited.

Unlike here in JMP, graphs are dynamically linked and interactive / live.

After a couple of minutes of tinkering, I found out that you can change the settings of the active or selected bin of the histogram in the Distribution Platform by going to Preferences > Graphs > Filled Areas - then select the Fill Selection Color of your choice and change the Fill Selection Mode option from Selected Patterned to Selected Same Color (link to animated gif screencast).

Hope this helps.

Re: How can you change the color of one single bin of a histogram?

Hi Randy, I'm brand new to JMP. I tried following your example above but I don't have a box for "Filled Areas," which might be because I'm running JMP 11.2. I'm wondering if anyone might know how I can access the "Filled Areas" section (if it exists) for my version of JMP.

The preferences to change the Fill Selection Color and Mode are new in JMP 12. Check with your site administrator to get access to JMP 12.
