Summary: Evaluating estimates of variance components is a vital part of evaluating MSA designs in general. The procedure used in JMP is based on simulations of estimates of variance components. This technical report walks through examples of how to compute estimates of variance components using the ANOVA or Expected Mean Squares approach, which is the method used in the MSA Design platform in JMP.
