Excel import: fix the bug

☐ cool new feature
☑ could help many users!

☑ removes something that feels like a „bug“

☐ nice to have

☐ nobody needs it

What inspired this wish list request?

I guess many users are annoyed about Excel which prevents JMP from opening an Excel file when the file is is opened in Excel.

What I don't like:
I update an excel file - and eager to analyze the data I open it in JMP - but: bam

Excel doesn't allow JMP to access the file. And JMP shows an error message.

An innocent user doesn't know at all that there is an easy solution: Just close the file in Excel and JMP will open the without an issue.

The advanced user knows the solution - but wonders why it is necessary.

For some data sets, there is not issues, but others seems to be protected as long as the data set is open in Excel.
Does anybody know the difference?

What is the improvement you would like to see?

When JMP detects that it has issues to open an Excel file,it should create a temporary copy of the data set and open the copy.
The source and update script should point to the original file.

Why is this idea important?

Users can edit analyze data "on the fly". No need for complicated open/close Excel.
