Many JMP® users like to include special characters in their reports, most commonly subscripts and superscripts. However, you can insert any Unicode character into many parts of your JMP reports manually (i.e., without scripting).
The process for inserting Unicode characters on Windows is not obvious. You can copy and paste them from the Character Map on your OS, but you must first set your font correctly in JMP Preferences.
The following is an example of inserting a superscript into an axis label on a JMP plot.
- Select Help > Sample Data > See an Alphabetical List…and open Big Class.jmp.
- Run the Graph Builder Smoother script found in the upper left pane. Our goal is to add a superscript “1” to the “height” label on the x-axis of this plot.
- Select File > Preferences > Fonts > Axis Title and change it to a Unicode font (for example, Lucida Sans Unicode). Click OK.
- Click Start > Search on your PC and type "Character Map" to open it.
- Select a Unicode font from the dropdown list.
- Check the Advanced View checkbox, if it is not already checked, to expose the Search box.
- Type "superscript" in the Search box and then click on the “1” shown in the grid.
- Click the Select button, and then click the Copy button.
- Go back to JMP, double-click on your “height” axis label, then use CTRL-V to paste the superscript value on to the end of the text.
On the Macintosh, you can insert Unicode characters directly by simply choose Edit > Special Characters (or Emoji and Symbols).
