Free Online Statistics Course Now Available in Spanish!

In virtually every field, gaining insight from data is critical to problem solving, innovation, and growth. But, to take full advantage of the opportunities your data provides, you need to know a few basic statistical concepts, like what approach to use, how to interpret and communicate results, and how best to act on what your data is telling you.

That is why JMP created the course Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving (STIPS). This online statistics course is available, free of charge, to anyone interested in gaining practical skills in using data and finding better ways to solve problems.

STIPS, which was originally developed in English, has been translated into other languages, including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Now, we are proud to offer STIPS in Spanish.

Why STIPS?
At JMP, our goal with STIPS is to increase statistical literacy around the world, especially in the science and engineering communities.

In developing STIPS we had two primary goals: First, to teach the analytical skills most relevant to solving real-world problems, as collected from our industry customers through a large survey. Using the extensive feedback we received from this survey, we prioritized course objectives and structured course design in seven modules.

A second driver was the growing need for certification, both in industry and academia. STIPS provides two levels of certification exams: if you pass the online exams at the end of each module, you earn an eBadge. After you pass the entire STIPS program, you can take a performance-based exam called " JMP Certified Associate: Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving ". Successful completion of this performance-based examination provides you with the JMP Certified Associate: Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving credential.

This course is about applying the scientific method to solve problems and drive improvements.

-Roger Hoerl, Ph.D., Professor of Statistics at Union College

Who should take the STIPS course?
The free course is appropriate for anyone interested in gaining practical knowledge in the application of statistics in science, engineering, or in process and quality improvement. STIPS also offers companies an efficient and standard way to train data-driven decision makers within their organizations. Finally, STIPS is an extremely useful course for students, which will help them better solve problems in their future workplaces.

STIPS is a very good course. I was happy to have an online course that focused on the important information, at an easy and understandable level.

-Andreas Trautmann, Process Specialist, Lonza

How does the STIPS course work?

STIPS is designed in seven modules, adding up to around 30 hours of self-paced learning. Each module includes instructional videos, JMP demos, questions, and exercises. STIPS also offers students the opportunity to practice newly learned techniques. The exercises can be done using a browser to access JMP Pro in the cloud or using JMP locally after downloading the data sets. Currently, only the first module is available in Spanish, though students could continue their learning in English. We hope to release future modules at a future date.

STIPS is excellent for balancing statistical theory and the practical use of analytics to solve common problems many organizations face on a daily basis.

-Pete Cannon, QMS Director and Quality Engineer, NVIDIA

How can STIPS be used?
STIPS is very flexible, so the course can be used in a variety of ways. For starters, it can be used as a stand-alone course to learn applied statistics, as the statistical concepts taught can be applied in JMP or other software.

STIPS can also be used as training for people with or without statistical knowledge, to learn how to operate the program efficiently. STIPS also supports existing JMP users, helping them get the most out of their investment in the software.

The modules in STIPS can also be used to support an internal company training plan in a number of ways:

  1. Before starting the course, students can take selected modules to align previous knowledge (for example, suggest the "Correlation and Regression" module to review basic knowledge in statistics).
  2. Throughout the course, modules in STIPS can be used as homework, with optional tracking available and e-badges serving as the final exam for each module.
  3. After the course, students can learn about other relevant topics that are not included in the standard curriculum. Most importantly, all modules help students become more data-driven decision makers in their workplaces.

How do I get started?

The course is available on the JMP site, registering on the following page:

https://www.jmp.com/es_es/online-statistics-course.html. If you don’t already have a profile, you will need to create one. Your profile is used to track your progress in the course and assign electronic badges that can be shared on social networks.
