This hybrid between traditional optimal designs and central composite designs gives you superior ability to estimate quadratic terms while retaining the flexibility of optimal designs with run size, model specification, and the ability to easily incorporate categorical factors. This is made a possible through a simple modfication to the coordinate exchange algorithm.
