Earth Day is April 22, and JMP is encouraging everyone to take a few hours over the coming week to go and spend some time loving on our home planet. With so many ways to celebrate Earth Day, we’ve only compiled a few ideas here to inspire you.
Show your community, neighborhood, or local park some love by picking up trash and plastic. Keep a special eye out for any plastics and other recyclables!
Swap out some of your household products with more sustainable options. Ever heard of the “If You Care” product line? Everything’s biodegradable and does not use chemicals or plastic. The company’s motto: “We care simply because it’s the right thing to do!” Check out Favorite Earth-friendly products or services in this space for more eco-friendly brands.
Beautify your yard by planting a tree or some native plants. Planting a tree is a relatively simple act that benefits the environment for years to come. If planting trees or wildflowers, be sure to look up what is native to your area! Native plants are restorative to local ecosystems and help local animals and pollinators.
Visit a local Farmer’s Market! Support a local farmer by eating locally grown food! It’s so much better for the environment.
Do you have a bag of clothes and used items in your house just waiting to be donated? Instead of trashing these things, consider donating them to a local thrift store or shelter. This keeps items out of our landfills – remember, your trash is another’s treasure!
From @katie_stone, check out this helpful article about growing your own food at home. Even in small spaces, it’s totally doable.

Passion for the environment and chemistry collide!
We’re all trying to do our part to diminish harmful impact on the environment. Green chemistry, and those who practice it, are committed to designing chemical products and processes that eliminate, or at least reduce, the generation of hazardous substances. The practice is fairly new and is continually evolving.
Join us Thursday, May 19, 1-2 p.m. to hear from two experts in green chemistry. They have experience practicing what JMP’s Data for Green initiative is all about.
What you’ll learn
What is green chemistry?
The impact of green chemistry on the environment.
Ways to practice green chemistry.
Panel Speakers
Grace Lasker is a teaching Professor at the University of Washington Bothell in Public and Environmental Health and Toxicology.
Rick Morgan is a Professor of Green Chemistry at the University of Washington who works with manufacturing to help them implement green chemistry more effectively.

After mentioning Ecosia at Kick-Off, @katie_stone asked me to share a bit about them here. As you may know, conservation and sustainability is a matter close to my heart. And so, as soon as I`ve heard about Ecosia, an internet search engine, which is using the revenue they are getting from the ads to plant trees around the globe, I`ve made it my standard search engine. And by now my web searches on my business laptop only contributed to planting hundreds of trees. So far Ecosia has planted a stunning number of 142 million trees. And now imagine what would happen if all JMP´ers would start using Ecosia as their standard search engine. How many trees would we be able to contribute? Some more background on Ecosia:
Ecosia is a search engine based in Berlin, Germany. It donates 80% of its profits to nonprofit organizations that focus on reforestation. It considers itself a social business, is CO2-negative and claims to support full financial transparency and protect the privacy of its users. Searches are encrypted and not stored permanently, and data is not sold to third-party advertisers. The company states in its privacy policy that it does not create personal profiles based on search history, nor does it use external tracking tools like Google Analytics
Do you get the same search results than you´d expect to get from Google?
No! Ecosia's search results have been provided by Bing since 2017 and enhanced by the company's own algorithms. But in most cases the searches deliver the results I need.
Where can I use Ecosia: It is currently available as a web browser extension or as a mobile app on Android and iOS devices. I personally think it would be a great if many JMP employees would start using Ecosia and then we start tracking & reporting JMP`s progress.
