JMP is joining the movement for a clean planet – and we need your help.
JMPers worldwide will join forces with volunteers in more than 180 countries for World Cleanup Day.
World Cleanup Day is the world’s largest one-day civic action tackling the global waste crisis.
At JMP we share the vision of a waste-free world and believe that we can make a difference for the future of our planet.
We hope that you (perhaps in collaboration with your family, friends, and colleagues) will make time to clean up trash in your community. Whether it’s a walk around your neighborhood or several hours in a community park, every bit counts.
Here’s the plan in 3 steps.
1. Collect
BEFORE
- Select your cleanup site – make sure your cleanup area is one that is not on private property or requiring special permission.
- Decide how you’ll dispose the waste. If necessary, contact your local municipal council or recycling company for permissions.
- Gather items you will need for a safe day of cleanup!
DAY OF
- Make sure you have supplies needed for a safe and fun cleanup. Wear gloves, close-toed shoes, and possibly long pants and sleeves if in an area with insects. Wear bug repellant and sunscreen.
- Bring hygiene supplies in case hand washing is necessary.
- Ensure that volunteers under 18 are accompanied by an adult.
- Clarify that during the cleanups all man-made materials should be collected (except hazardous or biohazard materials).
- Be environmentally aware; for example, do not intrude or encroach on bird nesting areas or aboriginal historic sites.
- Don’t forget to take pictures! If you’re comfortable, share your progress on social media with #WorldCleanupDay and #DataForGreen.
2. Count/Weigh
- Sort and separate materials that can be recycled, either during the cleanup or once you’ve finished.
- Weigh the materials that you collected. Suggestions for weighing include
- Places bags of waste on a scale at home.
- Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bags. Subtract the difference.
- Check with your local municipal disposal or recycling facility to see if you can weigh items there.
- Use a handheld luggage scale
- Dispose of items appropriately.
3. Report
- Report your results. Add a comment providing any details about your participation such as the number of individuals in your cleanup crew, location, and weight of collected waste. Feel free to include photos as well!
Together we can make a difference for the future of our planet!
