ProAir is a widely used rescue inhaler for the treatment of asthma and COPD exacerbations. The active drug in ProAir is albuterol, a short-acting beta-agonist that works by relaxing muscles in the airways. ProAir comes in multiple forms like the ProAir HFA pressurized metered dose inhaler, the ProAir Digihaler which monitors usage, and the breath-activated ProAir Respiclick. The standard ProAir HFA inhaler provides 90 mcg or 200 mcg of albuterol per actuation to quickly open the airways. Compared to other albuterol inhalers like Ventolin HFA, the ProAir HFA inhaler has a dose counter and is rated for a greater number of actuations. The Digihaler version helps coach patients on proper inhaler technique for optimal medication delivery. ProAir is used for fast relief of acute asthma symptoms and COPD flare-ups. It provides bronchodilation within 5-15 minutes but is not for maintenance therapy. ProAir is a cost-effective rescue inhaler.
