Interactive Binning - New in JMP 16

In this video, see how to create a new categorical variable from a continuous variable.  The capabilities are available on Mac and Windows.  View the demo for the operating system of your choice.

Interactive Binning lets us create and move cutpoints interactively, as well as several built in features to create bins based on the data.

Binning data is useful to understand data, and to create new variables for additional graphing and analysis.

Some built in features include:

  • Fill using Equal Width Bins - bins of a certain size
  • Fill using Bin Count - how many bins do you want?
  • Fill using Percentiles - JMP divides the range of the data by that quantile.
  • Fill using Mean/StdDev - outpoints set by the mean and +/- 1st, 2nd, 3rd Standard Deviation (SD) from the mean.
  • Fill using Jenks Natural Breaks - creates bin cutpoints so that the variance within each bin is minimized and the variance between the bins is maximized.

Bin Labels are highly customizable. There are built in options, as well as the ability to type the text you want as a label.
