Announcing new online course: Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving

Developed with industrial practitioners and academics from around the world, this online course is available – for free.Developed with industrial practitioners and academics from around the world, this online course is available – for free.In virtually every field – across engineering, industry, science, academia and beyond – deriving insights from data is central to problem solving, innovation and growth.

Software places statistical techniques within easy reach of everyone. But without an understanding of which approaches are useful, and how to check, interpret and communicate results, solutions will be suboptimal or unworkable, and the best opportunities will remain undiscovered.

That’s why we created Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving.

Developed with industrial practitioners and academics from around the world, this online course is available – for free – to everyone interested in building practical skills in using data to solve problems.

The course uses simulations, visualizations and practical examples to convey an understanding of the key ideas required to make use of data with confidence. And rather than present the required statistical techniques in isolation, we use real-world industrial scenarios throughout the course. This allows us to better contextualize the use of statistical methods, and to illustrate how to link them together in a coordinated way to solve common industrial problems.

JMP Pro is used as the enabling software throughout the course. However, the focus is on the practical application of proven and powerful statistical techniques. So, the knowledge and skills you gain from completing the course are transferrable. No familiarity with JMP is assumed, and you will be given access to this software through the virtual learning environment, or VLE, when you register.

Access to JMP Pro in the cloud is provided with the course.Access to JMP Pro in the cloud is provided with the course.

Because it’s in the cloud, you can access the course from any device, from anywhere. And the course will be localized into other languages, so you don’t have to be an English speaker. Built from the ground up for the modern learner, the course is available 24-7, so you can work when and how you want.

When all the course modules are completed, you will be able to start at the beginning and work through the whole course, or just take selected modules that are particularly interesting or relevant to you. For each module, you will see short three- to five-minute instructional videos, brief JMP demonstration videos, and questions and exercises to test your understanding and allow you to practice what you’ve learned.

The course provides frequent exercises to test your understanding. The course provides frequent exercises to test your understanding. There is also a self-assessment quiz at the end of each module so that you can track how your knowledge is building as you progress. When you receive a passing grade on an end of module quiz, you receive a badge certifying that you have successfully completed the content.

For each module, links to additional materials and suggested reading are provided in a ‘Read About It’ section, so if the module is particularly relevant, or you just want learn more, you have a path to follow.

Once enrolled in the course, you can learn more using the Statistics Knowledge Portal (or SKiP) on the JMP website and can ask questions or start a discussion on the JMP User Community. You also have free online access to the book JMP Start Statistics.

The course will consist of seven modules, totaling 25 to 30 hours of self-paced learning. You can take the first two modules now, and the remainder will be made available between now and early 2019. You can sign up for the course mailing list, and we’ll notify you as soon as new modules are available.

The available modules are Quality Methods (Module 3) and Correlation and Regression (Module 5).
Two of the seven modules are ready today, and the rest will follow shortly. Two of the seven modules are ready today, and the rest will follow shortly.
The Quality Methods module covers the following topics:

  • Statistical process control charts
  • Assessment of process capability
  • Measurement system studies

The Correlation and Regression module covers these topics:

  • Define and use correlation
  • Define simple linear regression
  • Define/explain multiple linear regression
  • Define/explain logistic regression

After completing all of the modules, you will have the option to obtain a formal certification in Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving. This performance-based certification can be used to demonstrate your mastery of this area to your institution, employer or potential employer, and is part of a larger JMP certification program.

Formal certification is possible, part of a broader program for JMPFormal certification is possible, part of a broader program for JMPWe’ve worked hard to create Statistical Thinking for Industrial Problem Solving to meet the needs of any industrially oriented engineer, scientist or student who wants to learn how to extract valuable information from data.
