Urgent JMP Live functionality needs

What inspired this wish list request?

We have just started using JMP Live and I am finding that basic functionalities that JMP users depend on are not available in JMP Live graphs built from Graph Builder.  These drastically reduce the usability and value of JMP Live and need to be updated urgently.

What is the improvement you would like to see?

  1. Can't hide and exclude rows when a local data filter is enabled.  This is a HUGE step backwards.
  2. Can't resize graph panels independently
  3. Column switcher does not retain axis settings
  4. If you have two Y's in the same panel, the graph will not be interactive
  5. Axis table from a caption box makes the graph not interactive
  6. If you try and use one graph in a dashboard as a filter, the dashboard will not be interactive.
  7. You can't resize element panels in a dashboard.
  8. Ignore empty platforms is not respected when using the "By" option.  This is a problem for using large number of process (which are not always active) in Control Chart Builder.
  9. You cannot use row states to graph or filter on

Why is this idea important?

One of the big sells for JMP Live is to be able to take charts you have made in JMP and publish them easily to the broader "consumer" community (vs having to do something like remake them in Power BI) where they can benefit from the amazing charts you can make in JMP.  However, with so much functionality being lost as you transition a graph to JMP Live, graphs and dashboards have to basically be remade to try and fit within the limitations of JMP Live and the interactions with the charts are much more cumbersome.  As fast as possible, functionality that matches native interacting with Graph Builder needs to be built out in JMP Live.

Hi @shampton82

thanks a lot for your suggestions. We are currently working on a few of them but have further questions on some others.

1. Can't resize graph panels independently.

We do support this, but there are limitations to where we can provide individual resizing. It would help to have an example of where we don’t allow it.

4. If you have two Y's in the same panel, the graph will not be interactive

We believe this depends on the graph type or data type. It would be helpful if you could give us an example for when this is not interactive for you.

7.  You can't resize element panels in a dashboard.

Is this the same as your 2. item? If not, how does it differ?

9. You cannot use row states to graph or filter on

Could you please explain this a bit more. An example of how JMP does this would be helpful.

thanks

Hey @dieter_pisot !

Thanks for the quick follow up.  Here is some more info to your questions:

  1. Can't resize graph panels independently.

We do support this, but there are limitations to where we can provide individual resizing. It would help to have an example of where we don’t allow it.

****This is the Panels inside of Graph builder.  If I have multiple Y columns all in their own panel or I am using Group Y or Group X chart zones, I cannot resize the panels once in JMP Live.  Appears to be related to using tabbed views.

  1. If you have two Y's in the same panel, the graph will not be interactive

We believe this depends on the graph type or data type. It would be helpful if you could give us an example for when this is not interactive for you.

****Using the new Parallel Y axes option in Graph builder cause the chart not to be interactive.  I tired to recreate my issue with having two Y columns in the same Y axis panel and I haven’t been able to re-create the issue.  I will update with an example when I can.

  1. You can't resize element panels in a dashboard.

Is this the same as your 2. item? If not, how does it differ?

****It is different, see note on Item 2.  I did see that on Un-tabbed Dashboards you can re-size panels.  It looks like if you use tabbed panels on a Dashboard that the resize functionality goes away for any panels that are tabbed.

  1. You cannot use row states to graph or filter on

Could you please explain this a bit more. An example of how JMP does this would be helpful.

****I often add in a row state column (so returns a 1 if the row is selected or a zero if the row is not selected) and then make a row state “filter” column (which returns a 1 for all rows when nothing is selected and as soon as a row is selected returns the values from the row state column, so you get “1” for selected rows and “0” for unselected rows).  This allows me to use the row state “filter” column in the local data filter to look at only selected rows or dynamically create binning that can be used in the Group X, Group Y, Overlay, Label, and Size chart zones for graph builder.  An example for this is if I have a the row state filter in the Group Y graph zone and the X axis different steps in our process and the Y axis is Qty of parts (with the chart being a bar chart)  I can then select a part family and the unselected parts will be in the “zero” Group Y panel and the selected parts will be in the “1” group Y panel.  Once I deselect the part family the Group Y panel condenses back to a since “1” panel.

****Item 10 to add:

Can’t reset Axis scales Individually, can only reset all at once.  Need the reset axis and re-set axis scale options to be available for each chart.

Thanks @shampton82

for the detailed information. This will help us prioritize our development work. We might reach to you at a later point if we need more information.

Excellent, thanks @dieter_pisot !

One other thing that I am noticing is that any interaction you have with a chart outside of resizing it or selecting data will cause the post to refresh, which is much slower than in normal JMP.  This makes interacting with your post a lot more painful.  You added in the auto-update check box on the local data filter which is great and helps a lot (in face it should be in normal JMP!) but has there been any work around improving the speed of the refresh and possibly eliminated the need for refreshing the entire post if you do something such as zooming in the axis of a single chart in a complex dashboard?
