Process screening - support non-normal distributions for capability calculations

What inspired this wish list request? The need for accurate capability analyses for processes where data does not follow a normal distribution. Currently, in the "Process screening" platform, if the data is not normal (bases on Distribution Column Properties), JMP only displays a warning message. However, the calculation of capability indices (Cp, Cpk, etc.) continues to assume a normal distribution, which generates inaccurate metrics. To get the correct results, the user is forced to switch to the Distribution > Capability Analysis platform, where non-normal fitting is properly handled. This difference in behavior between platforms creates confusion and leads to misinterpretation.

What is the improvement you would like to see?

I would like JMP to integrate the calculation of capability indices for non-normal distributions (or other specific distributions) directly into the Process Screening platform.

Why is this idea important?

This improvement is crucial for three main reasons:

  • Reliability and trust: Calculating normal indices on non-normal data leads to poor industrial decisions

  • Software consistency: It is fundamental that JMP users get the exact same capability results regardless of which platform they choose for their analysis.

  • Workflow efficiency and usability: This prevents engineers and quality professionals from having to juggle multiple platforms (one for the control chart, another for the actual capability) and allows them to centralize their process analysis into a single, comprehensive report.

Thanks
