What inspired this wish list request?
The issue arises when creating XY time‑based plots in Graph Builder with multiple continuous variables. As additional lines are added, JMP automatically reassigns colors—especially when a new line is plotted on top of existing ones. This causes the previously assigned colors to change unexpectedly, altering the interpretation of the graph. In some cases, even using UNDO does not restore the original color assignments.
For workflows involving many process variables plotted over time, maintaining consistent colors is essential, yet currently difficult or impossible. This makes building and updating these graphs tedious and error‑prone.
What is the improvement you would like to see?
I would like the ability to lock the color of each line once selected. For example, next to each variable in Graph Builder, there could be a checkbox that, once enabled, fixes the chosen color and prevents it from being automatically changed when new variables are added.
A stable color‑locking feature would ensure each variable maintains its assigned color throughout the graph‑building process, regardless of subsequent edits or additions.
Why is this idea important?
This enhancement would significantly improve usability, especially for users who routinely work with many continuous process variables over time. Consistent color assignment is critical for correct interpretation, comparison, and communication of results.
By preventing unexpected color resets, the feature would reduce frustration, avoid errors, and greatly streamline the creation of XY time‑based graphs in JMP.
