MSA design improvement

What inspired this wish list request? 

The current MSA Design platform is restricted to a fixed set of roles: Operator, Part, and Gauge. This rigid structure assumes that measurement variability only comes from these three sources. However, in many industrial contexts, other environmental or temporal factors are just as critical.

 

What is the improvement you would like to see? 

I would like the MSA Design platform to allow customizable and expandable factors, similar to the Custom Design platform but tailored for MSA.

  • Custom Labels: Instead of being forced to use "Gauge," let users rename the factor directly within the Design window (e.g., change "Gauge" to "Day" or "Site").

  • Dynamic Role Assignment: Allow users to define if a custom factor is Crossed or Nested directly in the setup UI, the MSA design structure is not really intuitive 

 

Why is this idea important? 

 

  • Ease of Use: It removes the "mental mapping" required to remember that "Gauge A" actually means "Monday" and "Gauge B" means "Tuesday." If we use the Gauge factor instead of a real Day factor

  • Professionalism: It ensures that the generated data tables and scripts are correctly labeled from the start, making them "audit-ready" without manual intervention.

  • Methodological Rigor: Modern MSA (like EMP - Evaluating the Measurement Process) often requires looking at multiple nested or crossed factors. Providing a flexible UI would make JMP more robust for complex measurement studies, moving beyond the traditional but limited "Operator/Part" mindset.

Our development team shared the following in response to your requests:

You can already add the factors you describe in the MSA design platform. You can add a "Day" or "Site" factor with an Other role. You are not limited to factors that match the given roles (except for Part, which is the only required role). We are evaluating other roles to add, so we will take this request into consideration. 
 
The interactive MSA Design Structure feature allows you to construct virtually any complex design structure. During development, we debated on how to make it easy for our users to describe crossed and nesting structures while also remaining flexible to handle complex structuring. Trying to do so within the Factor GUI would be difficult for nested factors, although we are still considering options for such an approach. For now, the Structure interface is your best bet to make sure the structure for your experiment is correctly specified. Factors placed next to each other are treated as crossed (indicated by the 'x') and factors placed within another factor are treated as nested within that factor.
