GraphBuilder Powers for Fishbone/hierarchical Diagram Platform

☑ cool new feature
☐ could help many users!

☑ removes something that feels like a „bug“

☐ nice to have

☐ nobody needs it

#myTop10_2025

What inspired this wish list request?

The Diagram function in the analyze / Quality and process menu is very helpful.
One can generate fishbone, hierarchical and nested diagrams.
Digging up Bones: Fisbone Diagrams

On the other hand, compared with the Graph Builder functionality in JMP18, it feels "outdated":
Fishbone/Hierarchical Graph via Graph Builder?

- no color dropzone [colors have to be applied manually, step by step for each entry]

- no Overlay dropzone - which could be used to control font settings

- no | X /Y Group Dropzones to structure the plot
the only option is a [by] dropzone - which removes the chance to save a script for the whole graph

The largest problem:
After adjusted fonts and color settings, the plot is not saved as a platform script. Instead, the script generates the plot as it is.
After adding new rows to the data table, the plot has to be generated from scratch.

What is the improvement you would like to see?

Please add a fishbone/hierarchical mode to GraphBuilder - or vie / versa: add GraphBuilder Powers to the diagram Platform.

- use a column to control colors

- use a column to control Font settings

- save a creation script that works after a table update (the current saved script is static)

- add X/Y Group Wrap / Page Functionality

Why is this idea important?

important - hm?

I guess that just a few JMP users use this plot mode - and they use it in a very simplified mode - or: they accept the current restrictions. So, I didn't tick
☐ could help many users!

On the other hand: the Diagram Platform is VERY helpful.
Maybe with a more user friendly implementation, more users will use it ...

Very good proposal!
I prefer not to integrate it into Graph builder but rather create a new platform. In addition, I wish that in this platform

  • the graphical elements are linked to the data (as in other platforms)
  • a graph could be created on a workbench like a mind map and the data table is being build on the fly.

Hi @Bernd2Heinen , thank you for supporting this topic and the comments : )

Agee, while working most of my time with Graph Builder, it fells like 1990 to have a non-linked report.

- create a graph on a workbench:
is already available. Just create a Hier Box and edit it via drag & drop / rename / copy & paste

- build a data table from the graph:

a light version of this idea is already available via right click menu/Make into data table

I agree - much better:
a data table in the background, UPDATED on the fly:
new entries are added, existing entries can be updated by editing the graph.

thanks about the hint to the Hier Box, I wasbn't aware of this possibility.

To explain my ideas a bit more: JMP has platforms like repairable systems simulation and structural equation models that have a similar graphical interface.

This fits under a more general request/need:  Network diagrams.  A fishbone diagram is just one of many types of directed acyclic graphs that JMP could do.

The Node Graph display box was scriptable up until version 14 or 15, but then was revamped for use in platforms like reliability simulation and SEM, and alas is no longer scriptable.  I had prototyped a network analysis using Node Graph 11 years ago.

I recommend making the NodeGraphBox and other associated display boxes scriptable so that users can prototype this type of innovative graphs further.

Only add to this: auto-recalc so diagram auto-updates when the table has changed.

Working with the two-column data table is clean and efficient already, having the diagram auto-update = chef's kiss.

Status changed to: Acknowledged

Thank you for submitting this request and for everyone adding to the discussion below!

Graph builder Powers + SEM Diagram Powers !
Thanks @Craige_Hales  for the link : )
