Customize & save column preferences in Fit Y by X Mean Std Dev report

What inspired this wish list request?

JMP17 Fit Y by X, "Means and Std Dev" output report changed the standard columns output.

Columns can be changed manually by right-clicking on the table and choosing the Columns I want to see.

Preferences to make these Column selections does not exist.  We do not want to create a script or distribute an Add-In.  We would prefer to easily update the Preferences.

What is the improvement you would like to see? Column selection from this output table should be available in the Platform Preferences pick-list.

Why is this idea important? We have several engineers in our company who use the "Means and Std Dev" report in their standard reporting for their important parameters.  They do not want the additional columns in the new standard report.  They want the ability to customize their own preferences for this platform.

Thank you for submitting this request @ted_ellefson. There was a related suggestion to add additional preferences for the OneWay platform, and we are evaluating both requests.

Hello, this is an email from one of our JMP expert users (Fred Zellinger) here at Seagate which further describes the issue and the dissatisfaction we are hearing about this change in JMP17.  He is responding to several other engineers who are experiencing issues and want help.  This JMP17 change disrupted many engineer's reports here at Seagate.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The JMP v17 release “forcibly” includes additional Means And StdDev() information on the One-Way platform which are not optional and cannot be disabled in the platform preferences.  This is an issue because it affects rendering (compared to JMP 16) in a way which is disruptive to efficient analysis and report generation.  New features should be introduced optionally and be controllable via Platform Preferences so that they are not disruptive.

The following script demonstrates the issue, using JMP SAMPLE data to perform one-way ANOVA and include a table of Means And StdDev’s:

dt=Open("$SAMPLE_DATA\Predicted Termination.jmp");

ow=dt<<Oneway(X(:Gender Code,:Minority Flag,:Disability Flag),Y(:Hourly Salary,:Comratio),BoxPlots(1),XAxisProportional(0),PointsJittered(1),MeansAndStdDev(1),MeanErrorBars(1),StdDevLines(1));

In JMP 16.2, the rendering easily fits on one screen and can be easily pasted into presentations:

In JMP 17, the MeansAndStdDev table was forcibly augmented with additional statistics display, instead of making the additional statistics optionally available.  The additional statistics result in a rendering that is not easily transferrable into presentations:

SAS/JMP should remedy this by:

  1. In new versions of JMP, make new features available “optionally” rather than by default.
  2. Make these new features selectable in the platform preferences (in JMP 17 there is no platform preference for disabling the new lower+upper 95% StdDev and line chart.
  3. If #1 and #2 cannot be done, then please add a Platform Preference called “Post Analysis Script” whereby users can include a JMP script that will act on the platform after rendering (so that more advanced customizations can be done).

Releases of new versions of software to a large and long-standing user community should introduce features “gently” to maintain usage stability and backwards compatibility.  (For an example of disruptive changes, review the Python 2->3 migration which was highly disruptive).

I can report that we are addressing this issue in the upcoming release of JMP 17.2 (and later). The solution implemented most closely resembles option 1) in @ted_ellefson's comment above. The additional columns referred to will be available optionally rather than being shown by default.

@Audrey_Shull thank you very much for this updated information!  This improvement will make many people happy here in my workplace.  We appreciate JMP listening to us and taking quick action to make this improvement.  Keep up the great work!!!
