Community members are known by their usernames. You come to know their personas as they ask and answer questions, share best practices, or write blog posts. Now you can get to know the Community members behind the usernames in our Member Spotlight series. The series is designed to foster greater connections between our Community members.
Here we spotlight @statman .
@statman has been a JMP User Community member for as long as the Community as existed and is currently one of our helpful Community Super Users. Why did he choose statman as his username? According to @statman , "The reason for my handle is funny. I was getting my hair cut and my barber asked what I did for a living...I tried to explain and as I was leaving he said see you next time statman...It was about the same time the movie where there was a line "I'm Batman". So he was making fun of me at the same time...It stuck."
@statman answers a few of our questions:
How long have you been a JMP User?
I have been using JMP since its inception. I happened to be working in a company that allowed the use of Mac computers and this was the first software available for the Mac. Previously I used SAS and the procedures associated with SAS (Proc GLM, Proc ANOVA, etc.). I still have JMP 3 running on an old Power Mac (540c).
What is one (or more) of your favorite hobbies?
Skiing, analysis of data sets (I know, pathetic) and spending time with the grandkids
Tell us a podcast, television series, book or movie you found entertaining in the last year.
This is tough as there are many...I won't bore you with my readings, but I "grab" a new paper that looks interesting (perhaps from references to previous articles, or from one of the statistical orgs.) every Monday and I read it (and often the references) for that week. I watch mostly sports on the TV. Hockey and college football mostly.
Give one reason you are a Community member or one aspect you like about the Community.
The reason I am a community member is two fold: First, to expose myself to a wide variety of application situations which in turn expands my capabilities for applying statistical method. Second, I teach statistical methods to non statisticians and I am always interested in finding alternative ways to explain what are in some cases extremely difficult statistical concepts. I have found camaraderie with some of the individuals on the forum.
This or That: What do you prefer?
- Cake or pie? Pie
- Morning or late night? Morning
- JSL or Graph Builder? Graph Builder
- Mountains or beach? Beach (as I live in the mountains)
Thanks for letting us get to know you, @statman ! We appreciate all you do.
