Member Spotlight: Craige_Hales

Member Spotlight Banner.jpgCommunity members are known by their usernames. You come to know their personas as they ask and answer questions, share best practices, or write blog posts. Now you can get to know the Community members behind the usernames in our Member Spotlight series. The series is designed to foster greater connections between our Community members.

Here we spotlight @Craige_Hales .

@Craige_Hales has been a JMP User Community member for nearly ten years. He is the author of the entertaining (and informative) Community blog, Uncharted.

@Craige_Hales answers a few of our questions.

How long have you been a JMP User?

I joined the JMP development group in 2001, but I didn't really start using JMP for fun until around 2009 when I built some hardware to aim a laser pointer to draw a clock. I used JMP to produce stereo audio to control the X-Y axis of the mirror system.

That's all that's left after our last downsizing. The front-surface mirrors and steppers should be somewhere...

What is one (or more) of your favorite hobbies?

I've dabbled in electronics for a long time. My first project was the Theremin (long gone) from a 1953 Radio Electronics magazine. https://www.pavekmuseum.org/theremin/diy1.html . It kind of worked. Dad helped, but we picked an aluminum box that was a little too small, and Theremin came to mean exactly that, as in "I've built another Theremin."

Tell us a podcast, television series, book or movie you found entertaining in the last year.

Every time I get to the end of my DVD collection, I restart with Good Omens and The Almighty Johnsons. You can't beat a series that knows when it is done.

Give one reason you are a Community member or one aspect you like about the Community.

The little orange circle that means a chance to interact with an adult.

This or That: What do you prefer?

  • Cake or pie? Did you know some people eat pie from the other end? And cake at right angles? And peel bananas the other way?
  • Morning or late night? Morning is the best time watch the sunrise
  • JSL or Graph Builder? I think scripting a remote server with Graph Builder sounds like a challenge
  • Mountains or beach? The tallest mountain is about as high as the deepest trench in the ocean. If you put them side-by-side and shrink the earth to the size of a basketball, would your fingertips be able to detect the roughness? Think grains of sand on a beach.

Thanks for letting us get to know you, @Craige_Hales ! We appreciate all you do.
