Students Tackle Graduation Rates with Data Mining and JMP® Pro

Jim Grayson, PhD, Professor; Mary Filpus-Luyckx, Director of Institutional Research, Augusta State University

Two student teams in the Business Analytics class at Augusta State University studied the important problem of student retention. Each team independently analyzed data to formulate a model and recommend intervention strategies to the university. Student results were then presented to the Director of Institutional Research. This paper will discuss the academic preparation students received before tackling the project, the project methodology, approaches taken by the student teams and the student recommendations. Finally, we will show the data, discuss the use of partitioning and logistic regression to understand the data and recommend intervention strategies, and share lessons learned and next steps in continuing this investigation.
