Complex decision making is challenging. It can involve an overwhelming number of choices and multiple criteria that compete against each other, and it often requires a team with different priorities to reach a consensus. Finding metrics that quantify the important characteristics places data at the center of our choices. Using a statistical engineering road map like the DMRCS – Define-Measure-Reduce-Combine-Select – process provides a way to step through decision-making challenges and reach defensible, reproducible decisions. Several examples demonstrate strategies to facilitate visualization and discussion throughout the decision-making process.
