How is is Rarity calculated in JMP Explore Patterns, and how is Rarity useful?

Rarity is a measure of how unlikely a pattern would be to occur by chance. Jmp Systems Engineer Ross Metusalem @Ross_Metusalem suggests thinking of it in terms of coin flips. A Rarity value of x is similar to the likelihood of flipping a coin and getting x heads in a row.
