Column settings are cleared when switching between columns. To retain them during column switches, first make your adjustments on the axis you want to format and then right-click the axis and select Save to Column Property. When you do this your custom settings are saved as a property of the column in the data table, which means any time you use that column in a graph (or switch back to it in column switcher) your customized settings will repopulate
