The bread and butter when teaching with JMP: Teaching statistical methods (3/6)

Need help with course development? No problem.Need help with course development? No problem.In my previous post, I focused on teaching core concepts in analytics by using tools built into JMP software: interactive teaching modules, calculators and simulators as well as bootstrapping and simulation.

This post addresses the development and teaching of courses on a broader scale, including more advanced or specialized methods like quality tools or text analytics.

It does not matter if you are considering teaching introductory statistics or other advanced courses on machine learning or advanced analytics. With JMP resources, there is no green field! Three types of resources that provide a kickstart with any course development are presented in this post.

Learning Library

It is probably fair to say that the JMP Learning Library with its one-page step-by-step guides (OPG) and short how-to videos tutorials has been the No. 1 resource for students for many years. Without any deep dive into the JMP documentation, students get started with a single page. OPGs address almost 100 typical questions you may expect to hear from your students, including importing data into JMP and sharing results.

All OPGs have the same structure: Following a short definition of the method, students get started with step-by-step instructions and sample data. Main steps and sample outputs are shown in screenshots, and they learn how to interpret the key results and where to find more information.

Needless to say, the content of the Learning Library is updated by the JMP academic team on a regular basis (the most recent version is from November 2019). If you find any important how-to question missing, please let us know.

Where to find? We suggest that instructors download the bundle with all OPGs in a single PDF document here. The additional benefit is that the bundle also includes the Analysis Guide, pointing you to methods, JMP platforms and OPGs for the typical questions asked about data.

How to use? We suggest that students use the Analysis Guide, the OPGs and short videos as a reference when needed. There are no “mandatory” guides. However, if you want to teach your students up-front before using the software, you can provide these options:

 

Lab activities

What is it? AP Statistics Resources on the JMP resources portal point you to the JMP Introductory Lab Activities (JILA). They provide step-by-step instructions and guidance on the exploration and application of statistical methods covered in AP Statistics courses. AP stands for Advanced Placement — examinations originally developed for colleges and high schools in the United States. These resources have been developed with 27 stats teachers combining their own course material with material from JMP.

Where to find? Links to each lab activity, along with instructor resources, are available here.

How to use? These resources can be used as in-class activities or homework assignments. They are designed to be used with JMP Student Edition.

Trainer kits

What is it? The 20+ JMP courses from SAS Education have been developed by industry-leading experts in statistics and analytics. All courseware is updated regularly to incorporate education best practices, technology advancements and feedback from numerous trainings all over the world. The teaching materials are an electronic copy of the training content, including instructor notes, PowerPoint slides, data sets and exercises. You get all the tools you need to easily teach core concepts around statistics and analytics, so you can spend your time teaching, not creating classroom materials.

Where to find? Choose Course Material Library on the JMP resources portal. While the Course Collection tab presents a recommended mix of resources by course type, the trainer kits can be found on the tab Request Solutions and Instructor-Access-Only Materials. You have to fill a Teaching Material Request form to request the course material, which requires a SAS Profile. After accepting the Terms and Conditions, your requested materials will be available for immediate download. It's that easy!

How to use them? Instructors may use some or all of materials provided, and can tailor them to meet the needs of the class. In all courses, a JMP journal is used for navigating all other content like data sets or scripted demos. The materials can inspire your course development, showing how concepts are taught by SAS education professionals. However, even if you pick some select examples or demos, the material will be of great help. 

Please note that use of these complementary materials is limited to course use at degree-granting academic institutions.
