This is definitely not true. 

Indirect in excel returns a valid cell reference from a string.  This has nothing to do with strings.  

 

This is simply indexing a matrix.  Check out the JMP scripting guide for matrix subscripting

Yes, what I said above is not correct.
And I should have used JMP's :[Index(Row() -x,Row())] is a function commonly used to substitute excel's INDIRECT() formula
JMP's :[Index(Row() -x,Row())] can do a lot more.
It, like INDIRECT(), can compose numerous applications.
