topic Question on doing % of total by row or by column in Discussions

We have some analysts and researchers using JMP 8.0 after using SPSS. There are past reports done in SPSS and we are hoping to mirror similar output using the tabulate function. Being new users I thought this would be posted.

The % of total is a great function but seems tricky in trying to do a percent by each row or column even though the help menus state it is quite possible.

Do you have any suggestions or tips/tricks to get a by row or column percent using the interactive tabulate function in JMP? Have there been some lessons learned? Could it be better addressed by typing out syntax vs using the interactive mode? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank-you

An example is reporting within a calendar or fiscal year the percentage of each service by the overall number of services provided by a county, such as:

County A % of Service A % of Service B % of Service C Total N
County B % of Service A % of Service B % of Service C Total N
County C % of Service A % of Service B % of Service C Total N

Message was edited by: Dagan

Assuming you have built a table with County A,B,C down on the side, and QTR 1,2,3,4 across the top, and % of Total for the statistics at the top. By default, the % of total is based on the whole table. If for each county, if you want to see the % of total for each QTR, take the QTR label and drop onto the % of Total heading. What you get is the % of total based on the sum of all the QTR for each county. You will see this better if you drop the key word "All" onto the heading QTR, then you will see that the % sum to 100 for the last column. If on the other hand, you want to see the % of total for each county given a quarter, click and drag the label "County" and drop it onto "% of Total". Now, the denominator is based on the sum of the count for all the counties.
Again, to see it clearer, just take "All" and drop onto County.
